What is Chloroquine?

Chloroquine is a drug belonging to the antimalarials and amebicides category. It is used to treat and prevent malaria and amebiasis. Malaria is caused due to parasites entering the body through mosquito bites. Whereas, amebiasis is a contamination caused by amoebae. In the present day scenario, Chloroquine has been widely used for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 disease. However, it is to be taken only under medical prescription. In rare cases, the drug is also prescribed to reduce symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, porphyria cutanea tarda, and sarcoidosis.

What are the doses of Chloroquine?

Chloroquine is available in oral tablets and should be administered only when prescribed by a doctor. The doses of the drug differ according to the purpose of treatment. It is usually prescribed as follows:

  • To prevent malaria, it must be taken once per week on the same day for two weeks before visiting a malaria-prone zone. It must be continued for at least eight weeks even after the return.
  • For treating malaria, the drug is administered in a high dose once and then followed by smaller doses for the next two days.
  • For the treatment of amebiasis, Chloroquine is given in high doses for two days. It is then followed by smaller doses for the next two to three weeks. Additional medicines might be prescribed for the prevention of severe infection.
