What is Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)? How low dose naltrexone works

Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist drug. It prevents the binding of opiate drugs with opioid receptors. This increases the production of endorphin and enkephalin. Thus it results in reducing nerve cell inflammation and autoimmune diseases.

Often patients are treated with low dose Naltrexone (LDN) within 1 to 5 mg to treat inflammatory diseases and addiction to alcohol, heroin, and other drugs. LDN also possess analgesic properties.

Which Patients Will Be Benefitted By LDN?

  • Autoimmune diseases like Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, Inflammation, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, Sjogren's Disease, Graves ’ disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Hashimoto.
  • Central Nervous System (CNS) diseases like Alzheimer’s, Autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and Neuro-inflammation.
  • Skin diseases like Psoriasis, Eczema, and Lyme disease.
  • It is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome and weight loss.
  • Cancer and HIV/AIDS.

What is the Standard Dose?

The typical dose should be taken between 9 pm to 3 am. It ranges between 1.5mg to 5mg (suspension, capsules, and cream). The result- blocking opioid receptors between 2 am to 4 pm. Thus the immune system is over-expressed due to endorphin production. The oral consumption of LDN must be IR composition only.

What Are The Possible Side Effects And Contraindications?

The good news is there are generally no adverse side effects as the dosage is too low. No withdrawal symptoms are even reported. In few cases, patients might experience nausea, headache, and lucid dreams. But, these side effect decreases overtime or the dosage can be maneuvered.

  • Patients must refrain from narcotic pain medications since LDN blocks opioid receptors.
  • Full-dose Naltrexone (50mg) may lead to adverse side effects on the liver. Thus, it must be taken with extreme caution.
  • Patients with an organ transplant or under immunosuppressive medications must not consume LDN as it may counteract the effect of the other medicines.
